SCENE SIX

Eleven months later SHAREEF ALI VUJOODI’s disciples receive instructions from their Imam. One dies in the process. HUSSAIN accepts obedience is his password to paradise.

SHAREEF ALI VUJOODI: (To a lone DISCIPLE.) It is the responsibility of every human being to bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and him alone.

Music. The room starts to fill with DISCIPLES. As they enter they announce where they are from.

DISCIPLE 1: Algeria.

DISCIPLE 2: Azerbaijan.

DISCIPLE 3: Kharakorum.

DISCIPLE 4: Arabia.

SHAREEF ALI VUJOODI: Ours is a holy war to advance the caliphate. It is incumbent on all Muslims to pledge allegiance to the caliph.

DISCIPLE 3: Oman.

HUSSAIN: Aamil.

DISCIPLE 4: Yemen.

DISCIPLE 2: Egypt.

DISCIPLE 1: Libya.

DISCIPLE 3: Zanzibar.

SHAREEF ALI VIJOODI: We know that in this world the fulfilment of desire as well as Divine Will require that the soul be severed from the body. If the soul becomes dependent on things that give pleasure to the body – and the body alone… then when the body dies the soul is lost with it, hiding in the dust with nothing to sustain it but the memories of past visceral pleasures that it is now denied. Tortured it lives in a kind of hell. You, my dear disciples, must learn, and some of you already know that there are three stages to salvation. Firstly to minimize the reliance of the soul on the corporeal we must – Anyone?

DISCIPLE 1: Not to let the soul govern everything your body does. Sometimes let the body just do what it likes.

SHAREEF ALI VUJOODI: Correct. Secondly

DISCIPLE 4: In the same way that the body has time to itself so must the soul. Give the soul time to itself.

SHAREEF ALI VUJOODI: Most of you have done this without ever having to think about it. Through meditation, devotion and obedience to me. It is the nature of your vocation, and most of you are Already at the third stage far enough advanced on the path to salvation – to let your soul, whilst remaining in your body, visit the world of angels and the sphere of the Godhead, in the search of the secrets of the Light of All lights. If you die in this stage rest assured that as soon as your soul leaves your body it will be united with the Light of All Lights, The Being Who Has to Be and the Reason of All Reasons. But assuming you live, on your return from Paradise your soul will not achieve the sublime everlasting spiritual perfection it seeks whilst a prisoner in your body, suffering the trials of this world of four opposites.

DISCIPLE 2: (To SHAREEF ALI.) Master, as you can imagine, I don’t understand how we’re going to enjoy the pleasures of paradise when we haven’t got a body?

SHAREEF ALI VUJOODI: Your soul may not have a body but it feels as if it had a body, because once it was within a body.

DISCIPLE 1: But without form how is it going to feel the pleasurable sensations we feel
